13 The Valediction

Alyssa sucked in air and dug her left hand into the thin mattress as Nel injected the anesthetic around the wound in her right arm. A cool hand slipped into her fingers and squeezed gently. She glanced up at Paul and eyed him gratefully.

“Try to hold still,” Nel said. She reached up to the handle on the surgical light and readjusted it.

“We have more important things to do than to worry about a scratch on my arm,” Alyssa offered through clenched teeth.

“Unless you want that scratch to get infected, you’ll sit quietly and let me take care of it,” Nel replied.

Alyssa held still as Nel put in a suture and tied it off. She worked adeptly until she covered the length of the cut with tidy stiches that held the skin together. She tied off the last knot and cut the suture.

“All done,” Nel said. “See how much easier it is when you let me do this without squirming around?”

Alyssa inspected the work, impressed. She flexed her arm a couple of times. “Thank you,” she said.

Nel nodded and taped a dressing over the cut. An awkward silence stretched. Nel swallowed. “I owe you an apology,” she said.

Alyssa remained silent. She felt Paul squeeze her hand again in support.

“It was wrong of me to doubt you,” Nel continued. “I—”

“It’s okay,” Alyssa said. “The last few weeks have been difficult on all of us.” She reached out and touched Nel’s arm. “With all that’s happened and the past you and Heru-pa share… it couldn’t have been easy on you.”

“I didn’t realize how much he had changed. I did not think he was capable of—”

Nel stopped when the door whipped open and Dharr stormed into the medical bay, frowning. Tef trailed after him, her lips pinched tight.

Alyssa’s stomach sank. “What now?”

“We were able to reach the elders,” he said.

“Isn’t that a good thing?” she asked.

“They didn’t believe me. They think we’re making it all up to cover for stealing the plane.”

“What?” Alyssa called out. “That’s ridiculous!”

Dharr grumbled. He paced the large room. “We are running out of time… Without the amulet, the elders will continue to sit on their hands, doing nothing!”

“Any luck trying to reach Heru-pa?” Nel asked.

Dharr shook his head. “Not surprisingly, he has not responded, but…”

“But what?” Alyssa asked.

“We were able to track the plane,” he replied. “It appears that he’s heading north. Way north.”

Alyssa’s mind reeled at the implication. “He’s going to—”

“Nephthys,” Dharr confirmed.

“Why would he do that?” Paul asked.

“The enemy of my enemy…” Alyssa whispered. She shook her head. “I didn’t know he hated me that much.”

“What could he possibly hope to accomplish?” Paul asked.

Dharr let out a forceful breath. “I have a suspicion, but I loathe to think about it.”

Before Alyssa could press him, the door opened again and Clay came in, a victorious smile lighting up his face.

“I could use some good news,” Alyssa said.

“I was finally able to get through to Kamal,” Clay replied. “And, better yet, Kamal said he should be able to route a call to Kade.
